I really enjoyed this video Keith, thank you. Mom bought me my first electric guitar in 1968.. It was a red Melody Maker and a Gibson Sky mark amp. from a quaint little guitar shop in Tarzana CA called Ernie Ball. Yup before the strings and before the guitars Ernie ran a guitar store right next to a tiny karate school ran by a little known man named Chuck Norris. A few years later I changed the pickup to a hum bucket the pu cover was embossed, "Gibson." In 1973 I sold it and bought a 1968 SG Special and a 1966 Super Reverb . The SR didn't have a reverb tank in it so the seller threw in a little Fender Reverb unit. I still have that SG and the amp and reverb to this day. All my heroes played SG: Garcia, Santana, Cipollina, Zappa, townsend,...etc. Ill never sell it! Ill give it away when I'm too old to play.

The upgraded version? Great idea mostly to honor of finding the 61 lost bass which already found it's way home. Most significantly to talk about the guitars of what Paul plays when he doesn't play the bass, as well as the ones that everyone never talked about. Also in the other video "The Beatles' Guitars of "Get Back": A Short History: featuring Tim Pierce" you were right the 61 bass was stolen "After the filming" since it turns out that it was actually stolen from the back of a van in 1972 long after the Beatles had split, and Paul had started his solo career band "Wings". I guess he was planning on reusing it for the band which explains why it was in the van.

I have a Gibson SG Standard and a Les Paul Standard. $2,000-3,000 is “luxury” to me. Getting above that and you’re into the exorbitant category. When I ever entertain the notion of spending for the Murphy SG I now want at $4500, I know it’s just because I love that aesthetic, but it’s just for that eye candy. I know that not one of the albums/cds/MP3s I have ever bought was made with a guitar costing more than two grand. Just not necessary. I also always liken it to photography back in the film days. So many talentless amateurs just ‘had to have’ Leicas-two or three thousand for a body and the same for each lens…. But all the professional work in the world was being done with Nikons and Canons at a quarter of the price. The more insecure we are, the easier it is to convince us that we need to spend megabucks just to do basic things.

Saw Adam Levy playing at Nelson’s Drum Shop on June 5th and his backline amp was one of these brown panel amps. The whole rig was a telecaster a EHX DMM and the amp. Sounded glorious! A guy could chase that tone for a long time trying to get that much tone.

Loved the intro actually thought it was JH. My PRS Core Brent Mason and Fender Brent Mason are luxury. They are finished nicer than others and I do play them more. But also play the shit out of my squire pine tele. My mesa is luxury but mainly play my peavey classic 50 410. Love all. On watches I wear a apple watch day today. when I go out I wear a swatch automatic bought it 13 years ago in DC. Its worth more than I paid. Desire a 3k to 5k luxury watch. Not to impress but I would love the better movement and finish. Know one knows who Iam or what's in my studio but its over 50K in gear. I dont brag or show off. It makes me happy.

  • @rfpho1456

Anything beyond a basic functional instrument is ‘luxury’ to some degree…. A £5 quartz Casio watch does the job as well as a Breitling Aerospace that costs 1000x as much . Most watches are jewellery. It’s luxury if it’s better than you need. So for a pro, it’s probably a different benchmark, especially for musical instruments where tone is subjective, and possibly distinctive.

But where would we be without it? This world would be so empty without art but technically we don’t NEED it to survive; but we kinda do lol These are the tools with which we make art; luxury items to make luxury results/products. My answer tho was any guitar over $1200 ish feels luxury. My first guitars were a couple hundred bucks and got me started. The first guitar I saved for and bought myself was an American made 57 reissue Strat and for like $1400 new. While that seems reasonable to me now, I still think anything in that range or above is a “professional” instrument and therefore luxury.

You have check out vola guitars. They are worth the money for the guit. ar you get it would coast you an arm and a leg if the three big guitars company's were to make the same guitar and they sell their guitars direct . They are made in Japan and I'm my opinion their beautiful and sound great. A nother company called eart make a really good guitar , the same thing if the three big guitar companies were to make it , like I said before it would coast you a lot of money. Ps love your pod cast very informative. Thank you. Vincent

I have a particular Strat hard tail that I love, its not a Fender and certainly wasn't a cheap copy, it was a limited number manufactured rock machine and it has been well loved and gigged, its had upgrades and set ups over its life and plays like butter (for my hands) but still when I go to gigs I will inevitably get a middle aged gentleman that will inquire about my Guitar and assert that I should really get a Strat, and go on to tell me about the plethora of Fenders and/or Gibson's they have at home, I love talking gear but it can suck sometimes, the only thing you can say after watching my band play for 45 minutes is how you don't like my guitar because its not Fender 😑

I vaguely recall Ray Boatright, the singing preacher who funded the opening of the first Mosrite factory, being killed in a robbery or some attack right outside his church following a service. I was a schoolboy at the time and never knew the details. The murderer was caught is all I ever heard. If anybody knows any specifics please post a comment. Thanks for the memories of Semie & Andy, the instruments and the artists.

I've been using a lefty Strandberg since they released those new Boden's last September. I haven't actually recorded with any other guitars in the past 9 months since it sorta just works. If I need to switch things up I'll end up using different amps / pedals. I think if a guitar suits someone's needs then I don't really consider luxury at all. Interesting video for sure.

I have a Kramer Striker hss superstrat that i play almost exclusively. The hss is almost verstile enough. although if i had to make one mod, i would put a splitable humbucker in the bridge. I also have a cheap hss Starcaster strat that i've almost beat to crap that i play on occasion but mainly keep around for sentimental value. I have two acoustics, a steel string acoustic and a nylon stringed classical. (Technically i just ordered the classical the other day and it comes in tomorrow.) At one point in time, i had almost 10 guitars, but due to bad descisions or just boredom, had to sell most of my guitars. Sure, Imiss my LTD V and Snapper at times. For the most part, I'm happy just rocking out on my Kramer.

The difficulty in defining Luxury is that it quickly benches a matter of degrees. In 2020 I bought a used Fender Road Worn Telecaster for $650. It is a fantastic guitar that can cover every song at every gig. I consider a guitar that can do that essential for me. I also think a second guitar of equal ability is essential for a working musician. But anything above that starts to be a degree of luxury, all the way up to the most rare/old/expensive guitar I own. I had the money, and chose to spend the money to buy them even though they were not essential. They are a luxury until the day I part with them, because I can still be a working musician without them. You don't need a 59' Strat to cover John Mayer at the local winery, a Mexican Fender works just fine. No one will know. I play the vintage stuff and the tube amps because of a whole different issue about preserving a window in American music. Not modeling, preserving, (maybe continuing is a better word.) But it's not about luxury. That Collings is luxurious. It's spectacular. It's an example of guitar building at it's finest. And I would be bored playing it in 5 minutes. It's a simple test for me. Look at your most expensive guitar and ask yourself. Do I love PLAYING this guitar, or did I just love the idea of finding it and buying it? There's your answer.

  • @RockandrollNegro

I always found it kind of fascinating that the origin stories of most amp makers (Marshall, Peavey and Dumble) all start out about the same, but once those boutique makers switch to mass production, the "mystique" of the early models fizzles. Dumble never went to mass production, so his amps are still fetching massive amounts on the collectors market, while you probably couldn't even give away those early Peaveys.
